Awards

The QueenBritish and European pointers to the three most established awards ceremonies – the 64th Golden Globes, The 60th Orange British Academy Film Awards and the 79th Oscars – in the upcoming 06/07 season can be found among some of the principal winners on this year’s final trophy trail.

At the 9th British Independent Film Awards, the awards were spread around, including two for Shane Meadows’ This is England (Best Film, Most Promising Newcomer – Thomas Turgoose), Andrea Arnold’s Red Road (Actor & Actress – Tony Curran & Kate Dickie) and Kevin Macdonald’s The Last King of Scotland (Director, Technical Achievement – Anthony Dod Mantle BSC).

Venus (Supporting Actor – Leslie Phillips), Kidulthood (Debut Director – Menhaj Huda), The Road to Guantanamo (Documentary), The Queen (Screenplay – Peter Morgan), London to Brighton (Achievement in Production) won one each.

At the European Film Awards, Pedro Almodovar’s Volver and Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s The Lives of Others pretty much shared the major spoils.

To Volver went Director, Actress (for Penelope Cruz), Cinematographer & Composer, while The Lives of Others garnered Film, Actor (Ulrich Muhe) and Screenwriter.

Some British compensation came in the shape of a shared Cinematography award for Barry Ackroyd BSC (The Wind That Shakes the Barley) and the Prix Screen International to veteran producer Jeremy Thomas.
